The Grand Canyon of Oman

Wadi Ghul and Wadi Al Nakhr form a single dramatic canyon system beneath Jebel Shams, Oman's highest mountain. Often called the Grand Canyon of Oman (and sometimes the Grand Canyon of Arabia), the gorge plunges roughly 1,000 metres — about 200 metres deeper than the Arizona Grand Canyon — through layered limestone cliffs, jagged spires and pale-cream terraces. It is one of the most photographed landscapes in the entire Arabian Peninsula.

The canyon is also a walkable, livable place. Hanging on its walls are the abandoned mountain villages of Sab Bani Khamis and As Sab, with their stone houses and terraced fields still intact, and along its floor run the turquoise pools of Wadi Al Nakhr and the famous Hanging Pool cave.     The classic Wadi Ghul day traces the canyon rim between the abandoned mountain villages of Sab Bani Khamis and As Sab, passing the same cliff-edge ledges made famous by the W6 Balcony Walk, but with extra time to explore the stone houses, terraces and irrigation channels that once supported life on the canyon walls.

    For a more adventurous day, we drop from the rim into Wadi Al Nakhr itself — following the streambed past crystal-clear turquoise pools, low waterfalls and shaded canyon walls, and finishing at the famous Hanging Pool in its small cave. The full canyon-hike-and-swim experience typically runs around 4–5 hours on the ground with Ali carrying the safety kit, helmets for the steeper sections and a clear water-level briefing.

    Comfortable swimmers, fit adventure travellers and confident canyoners. The descent is optional — if water levels or weather make it unsuitable on the day, we switch to a longer rim hike instead, with no loss of scenery.

    Pair the canyon day — or take a gentler day instead — with a guided cycling tour of Old Al Hamra: the UNESCO-listed mud-brick village, its working falaj irrigation channels, the date-palm groves and the family homes that still line the wadi. Ali supplies bikes, helmets and the route briefings.

  2. Best for

    Families with younger children, less-mobile travellers and anyone who wants to balance a big canyon day with a slow afternoon in the old village. Can also be added as a relaxed evening addition to the canyon day.

    Because the road up to the canyon-rim viewpoints and into the upper wadis finishes with rough gravel, a 4WD is the practical way in. Ali offers local 4x4 transport for any of the tours above — pick-up from Al Hamra, Nizwa or your hotel — as well as multi-day camping trips across the Hajar Mountains with full equipment supplied.

    Travellers without their own 4WD, photographers after sunset shots over the canyon, and anyone wanting to string several Jebel Shams adventures into one longer trip. Camping gear (tents, sleeping bags, cooking kit, chairs) can all be arranged on request.

    The canyon sits on the north face of Jabal Shams, in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, accessed via the village of Al Hamra. At roughly 1,000 m deep — about 200 m deeper than the Arizona Grand Canyon — Wadi Ghul is widely described as the deepest canyon in the Middle East, with sheer layered-limestone walls that change colour through the day from cream to deep red.

  2. Best season & preparation

    The hiking season is October to April. Bring sturdy shoes, 2–3 litres of water per person, sun protection and a light windproof layer; for the canyon-pool day, bring swimwear, quick- dry clothing and shoes you don't mind getting wet. A 4WD is recommended for the upper roads; a local guide is strongly recommended for the canyon descent.

The canyon season runs from October to April. Winter and early spring bring the most comfortable temperatures for the rim; spring also brings the best water levels in the canyon pools. Avoid the May–September heat.
